How to list volunteering on your resume
Present volunteer work as evidence, with placement options and a worked example.

Volunteering can be some of the most useful experience on your resume. It shows initiative and real skills, and it can fill a gap or support a change of career.
The University of Sydney's resume guide notes that most employers are interested in voluntary work because it offers evidence of initiative and transferable skills. It recommends the same layout as employment: title, organisation, dates, duties and achievements.
Where to put volunteering
| Your situation | Where it goes | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Volunteering is directly relevant to the job | Experience section, labelled "Volunteer" | It is evidence for the role and should be read with your other experience |
| Volunteering shows transferable skills | Separate "Volunteering" section | Keeps paid and unpaid roles clear |
| You are a student or graduate | "Experience" or "Leadership and volunteering" | Often your strongest evidence |
| Volunteering covers a career gap | In date order within Experience | Shows what you did during that time |
| One-off or unrelated volunteering | Brief line under "Community" or omit | Saves space for stronger evidence |
Write volunteer roles like jobs
Give the role a clear title, even if the organisation did not. "Volunteer" is less informative than "Volunteer Events Coordinator".
| Vague | Specific |
|---|---|
| Volunteered at a food bank | Volunteer Warehouse Coordinator, Example Food Relief, Adelaide SA · Saturdays, Feb 2025 – present |
| Helped with events | Rostered 25 volunteers for monthly distribution days; introduced a shared sign-up sheet that cut no-shows |
| Treasurer of a club | Treasurer, Example University Badminton Club · Prepared annual budget of $8,000 and reconciled accounts for the AGM |
Volunteering, internships and the law
Volunteering is unpaid. The Fair Work Ombudsman describes it as giving your time to support a cause, typically for a charity or not-for-profit, and notes that a volunteering arrangement could turn into an employment relationship. Internships and unpaid trials are different; the Fair Work Ombudsman's unpaid work page explains when they must be paid.
On your resume, describe the work accurately: "Volunteer", "Intern" or "Placement student".
Student visa holders
Student visa holders generally have a work limit of 48 hours a fortnight while their course is in session. UNSW's visa and work rights page explains that voluntary, unpaid work is not included in that limit if it benefits the community, is for a non-profit organisation, would not otherwise be done for wages, and is genuinely voluntary. Check your own conditions with the Department of Home Affairs before relying on this.
A worked example
Fictional applicant Leila Haddad is moving from hospitality into community services. Her volunteering is her most relevant evidence, so it sits at the top of her experience:
Volunteer Intake Assistant, Example Community Legal Centre, Canberra ACT · Mar 2025 – present (one day a week)
- Completed first-contact intake for about 20 clients a week, recording details in the case system.
- Referred clients to tenancy and financial counselling services using the centre's referral guide.
- Helped update the intake checklist after noticing repeated missing information.
Questions about volunteering on a resume
Does volunteering count as real experience?
For the skills it shows, yes. Label it clearly so the reader knows it was unpaid, and describe what you did with the same care as a paid role.
Can a volunteer coordinator be my referee?
Yes, if they have seen your work. See referees on an Australian resume.
Should I include volunteering from overseas?
Include it if it is relevant. Explain the organisation briefly, as you would an overseas employer. See writing a resume with no Australian experience.
What about a short one-day event?
Include it only if it is directly relevant or shows something your other experience does not.
