Teacher resume in Australia
Show your teaching area, truthful registration status and evidence of planning, assessment and inclusive classroom practice.

A teacher resume needs to show what happened in your classroom, not just that you delivered lessons. Start with the school’s advertised needs, then choose evidence of planning, assessment and the way you support different learners. Keep your registration status easy to find and distinguish a supervised placement from an employed teaching role.
Start with the school and the jurisdiction
Read the position description before selecting examples. Note the year levels, subjects, school context and documents requested. A classroom example that is excellent for one position may be peripheral to another. Keep a small evidence bank, then choose the examples that explain the contribution this school needs.
AITSL’s registration guidance explains that state and territory authorities manage teacher registration. It distinguishes provisional and full registration. Name your actual authority and status; do not describe a pending application as approval. For a NSW role, check NESA’s accreditation guidance. In other jurisdictions, use the relevant authority, such as VIT, QCT or TRBWA, rather than assuming the NSW process applies.
Build a readable teaching resume
| Section | Evidence to include | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Opening summary | Teaching area, career stage and relevant classroom contribution | Avoid an unsupported claim of expertise |
| Registration | Authority and truthful current status | Match the jurisdiction and the job instructions |
| Teaching experience | School context, year levels, subjects and dated responsibilities | Separate placement from employed practice |
| Assessment | How you checked learning and changed instruction | Explain your own contribution |
| Education | Qualification, institution and completion status | Mark an unfinished course clearly |
| Checks and referees | Requested current checks and appropriate referees | Obtain permission before sharing details |
Use clear headings and recent experience first. The Australian resume guide provides the general structure; the classroom teacher example shows how that structure can look in practice.
Show curriculum, assessment and inclusion together
A list of curriculum names does not show how you teach. Describe a sequence you planned, the learning evidence you used and the adjustment you made. Name the curriculum or syllabus you actually worked with when it is relevant to the advertised position. Avoid implying that you have taught a framework you only studied briefly.
For inclusion, explain the practical adjustment rather than applying a broad label to yourself. You might describe adapting an explanation, preparing a visual routine or collaborating with a learning-support colleague. Keep individual learners anonymous. Leave out names, diagnoses and details that would allow a student to be identified.
Fictional worked example: turning placement into evidence
Fictional example: Taylor Example completed a supervised primary placement at Fictional Banksia School. The school, candidate, dates and results below are invented teaching material.
The first draft says: “Taught literacy and managed classroom behaviour.” It describes a responsibility but leaves the reader guessing about the teaching.
A more useful version is: “Planned a six-week writing sequence with the supervising teacher, used initial samples to group learners and revised the modelled paragraph after reviewing exit tasks.” A second bullet could explain how Taylor used agreed visual routines to make lesson transitions clearer.
These bullets describe actions and an observable teaching decision. They do not invent a test-score improvement. In your version, use a genuine result or a specific change you can explain. Keep the supervision visible and choose a referee who saw the work.
Match the detail to your career stage
For a graduate application, give placements enough space to show planning, feedback and reflection. Include the school context and what you did under supervision. A university project can support an example, but it should not be presented as paid classroom employment.
For an experienced teacher, lead with recent teaching and show how assessment shaped the next lesson or unit. For a leadership position, explain the scope of your coordination, the decisions you owned and how colleagues used the work. A title alone does not demonstrate leadership.
Check screening and application documents
Service NSW’s Working with Children Check guidance covers child-related work in NSW. Check the school’s instructions and your jurisdiction’s process. Keep teacher registration and child-related screening as separate entries when the employer asks for both.
If the school requests selection criteria, use the resume as an evidence map and prepare the response separately. The selection-criteria guide explains the difference. Before sending, check status wording, dates, attachment names and referee permission against the actual application pack.
Questions about teacher resumes
Should a graduate include placements?
Yes. Label them as supervised placements and describe planning, teaching, assessment and feedback you actually completed. Do not present placement time as an employed teaching position.
Can I write that registration is pending?
State the truthful current status and the relevant authority. Do not promise an approval date or describe a pending application as current registration.
Should every lesson appear on my resume?
No. Choose examples that match the school’s needs and show your teaching decisions. Keep a fuller evidence bank for interview preparation.
How should I describe student outcomes?
Use evidence you can support, explain the context and protect student privacy. If you cannot substantiate a numerical improvement, describe the observed learning or teaching adjustment accurately.
