Working in Australia
LinkedIn profile tips for the Australian job market
Set location, headline and Open to Work deliberately so Australian recruiters can find and verify you.

Australian recruiters use LinkedIn to search for candidates and to check applicants they are already considering. Your profile does not need to repeat your resume. It needs to confirm it, make you findable for the roles you want, and show a little more of how you work.
What recruiters look at first
| Profile section | What it does | Australian tip |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Search filters often start here | Use the city you want to work in, e.g. "Melbourne, Victoria, Australia", if you can legally work there |
| Headline | Appears in search results | Name the role and a proof point, not "Seeking opportunities" |
| About | Your short story | Three short paragraphs: what you do, evidence, what you want next |
| Experience | Confirms your resume | Same titles and dates as your resume; a few results per role |
| Skills | Search and endorsements | Match the terms in the job ads you target |
| Open to Work | Signals availability | Choose who sees it (see below) |
Write a headline that works in search
Your headline appears next to your name in search results. Lead with the job title you want, then one or two specifics.
| Weak | Stronger |
|---|---|
| Looking for new opportunities | Payroll Officer · Xero and Employment Hero · Single Touch Payroll |
| Recent graduate | Graduate Data Analyst · SQL, Python, Power BI · Capstone with Example Grocers |
| Passionate about people | HR Advisor · Employee relations and recruitment · Fair Work compliance |
Keep your experience consistent with your resume
Recruiters often check your LinkedIn after reading your resume. Mismatched dates or titles create doubt. Your profile can include more roles than a tailored resume, but the shared ones should match.
Use Open to Work deliberately
LinkedIn's Open to Work help page explains the visibility choices:
- All LinkedIn members: adds the #OpenToWork photo frame, and is visible to people at your current company.
- Recruiters only: shown to people using LinkedIn Recruiter. LinkedIn says it takes steps to hide this from recruiters at your current company, but cannot guarantee complete privacy.
- Visible only to you: your preferences are used to tailor your job recommendations.
If you are currently employed and looking discreetly, "Recruiters only" is the usual choice.
Show work rights only if you want to
Your profile is public. You are not required to show your visa status on LinkedIn. If you want recruiters to know you can work without sponsorship, a short line in your About section is enough, such as "Permanent resident in Sydney." Detailed visa information belongs on your resume and in application forms.
A worked example
Fictional applicant Ana Silva moved from Lisbon to Brisbane and wants a marketing coordinator role. Her updated profile:
- Location: Brisbane, Queensland, Australia
- Headline: Marketing Coordinator · Email campaigns and HubSpot · B2B events
- About: "I coordinate email campaigns and events for B2B companies. At Example Software in Lisbon I ran 40 email campaigns a year and organised two customer conferences of 300 people. I moved to Brisbane in 2026 and I am looking for a marketing coordinator role in software or professional services. Permanent resident."
- Open to Work: Recruiters only, with "Marketing Coordinator" and "Marketing Executive" as job titles.
Questions about LinkedIn in Australia
Should my LinkedIn profile match my resume exactly?
The facts should match: titles, employers and dates. The wording can differ. Your profile can be broader, while each resume is tailored to one job.
Should I use Australian spelling on LinkedIn?
If you are targeting Australian roles, yes: organise, analyse, centre. It matches the job ads recruiters search with.
Do I need a profile photo?
A professional, recent photo is normal on LinkedIn, unlike on an Australian resume. See why photos stay off Australian resumes.
