International company job guide
Practical tips for applying to international companies: writing your resume, assessing role requirements, preparing for interviews, and matching your experience to the job description.
Many applications do not fail because of ability. They get filtered early by work rights, PR/Citizen requirements, security clearance, or Job Post keywords in an ATS. Judge first, then spend time tailoring.
The 4 highest-leverage areas for current students and new graduates. More tips can be added over time.
Resume
Australian resumes usually do not include photo, DOB, gender, nationality, or full street address. Privacy and anti-discrimination expectations are strict.
Student visa
During term, student visa holders are usually limited to 48 hours per fortnight; official breaks are usually unlimited, with research-degree exceptions.
485 visa
If a Job Post only asks for PR or another full-work-rights visa, 485 can often satisfy the work-rights requirement. This matters.
Job Post match
Sending one generic resume everywhere is weak. Rewrite the resume around each target role.
ATS means Applicant Tracking System. Employers use it to collect, screen, and manage resumes. It reads resume structure, headings, keywords, and experience, so online applications need clear formatting that software can parse.
Some opportunities are not lost because you are weak. They are lost because you applied late, booked slowly, or did not update the resume before sending it.
Apply upward
01
If you are looking for Junior roles but the ad says Mid Level, apply when your core skills overlap. Companies often hire several roles at once, and recruiters may redirect you to a better-fit opening. Applying creates a chance; not applying creates none.
Refresh first
02
Offer Underway's Job Coach includes one free resume update. The refreshed resume may improve your match score, especially if you add the experience called out in gap analysis.
3-day window
03
Always check the posting date before applying. Roles posted within 3 days usually perform best; after 1 week, other candidates may already be in second-round interviews, so your timing is weaker.
Book early
04
You may pass the first interview, but another candidate could already be at final round and receive the offer first. When scheduling interviews, choose an earlier slot whenever possible.
01 / Resume basics
Getting interviews depends heavily on the resume. Passing ATS screening is the first critical step; otherwise you never get the chance to interview.
01
Resume basics
Australian resumes should not include photo, date of birth, gender, nationality, marital status, or full street address. Privacy and anti-discrimination expectations are strict.
We already help with this
The system extracts relevant experience from your profile, builds a Job Post-aligned resume, and keeps learning from your Q&A after each application so your resume coverage improves over time.
02
ATS template
Australia has no rule that your name must be left-aligned or centred, and there is no universal resume colour rule. What matters is that ATS can read it quickly and the resume still looks professional.
We already help with this
You can choose from continuously updated templates, from safer ATS layouts to two-column templates better suited for email. The system also helps cover ATS-relevant keywords to improve interview chances.
03
Application pack
Many Australian roles ask for a cover letter. Even when optional, government, university, NGO, health, community, and education roles may value it more. A strong cover letter is not a longer resume; it answers Why you and Why this company with specific evidence and role motivation.
We already help with this
For each role, the system uses Job Post analysis, profile evidence, gap analysis, supplemental evidence, and application notes to write a cover letter. The aim is trust: connect role fit, personal motivation, and verifiable experience instead of producing a polished but generic template.
06
Job Post match
Recruiters and ATS both look for the Job Post's keywords, tools, responsibilities, and seniority. A strong resume is not about filling the page; it puts the most relevant evidence where it is easiest to find.
We already help with this
For each role, the system analyses match score, gap notes, and missing context through Q&A, then creates a tailored resume and cover letter instead of reusing the same generic resume.
02 / Eligibility gates
Check work rights, PR/Citizen, and security clearance quickly so you do not waste time on roles that cannot accept you.
04
Visa reality
Student visa holders are usually limited to 48 hours per fortnight during term and can usually work unlimited hours during official breaks, with research-degree exceptions. A 485 Temporary Graduate visa usually allows unrestricted work. It is not PR, but for most non-security-sensitive roles, it can still be enough to apply. Australia also has strong anti-discrimination expectations, so international students can still apply for many roles.
We already help with this
Role analysis extracts full working rights, no sponsorship, and visa wording signals, then shows the requirements in role intel.
05
Security clearance
Many defence, federal government, Canberra, or sensitive-data roles require Baseline, NV1, or NV2 security clearance. Australian Government security clearance usually requires Australian citizenship and a checkable background, so most international students cannot apply for those roles.
We already help with this
We flag PR/Citizen/security-clearance requirements so you can review PR-required roles from the application panel.
03 / Application review
After each application, review where the issue is: resume, technical ability, interview performance, or role fit.
07
Review loop
Many people get no interviews not because they are completely unqualified, but because the resume is missing a Job Post keyword, project proof, tool name, visa wording, or ATS-friendly heading. The problem is that you usually cannot see it yourself; you only feel that you have applied a lot.
We already help with this
The system links Job Post keywords, match score, gap notes, and resume versions so you can see whether the issue is missing keywords, missing evidence, or role mismatch.
08
Interview review
If you keep getting stuck at technical interviews, you cannot rely on vague feelings to prepare. You need to record the questions asked, knowledge gaps, and project explanations that were unclear, otherwise you will lose points in the same place again.
We already help with this
Career Coach can review your application and interview records, turn failure patterns into a next-step plan, and help each round become more targeted than the last.
09
Local proof
Australian employers care about local context: communication style, references, punctuality, initiative, and whether you improve from feedback. Your first step can be a paid internship, casual admin role, customer service, university casual role, volunteering, or contract/temp role.
We already help with this
Career Coach reviews your real application performance and plans the next step so every application cycle becomes progress.
