Writing a resume for Australian government jobs
Use your resume to map dated evidence to the advertised government work, then prepare the pitch or criteria response the information pack asks for.

For an Australian government application, make the resume an evidence map for the advertised work and prepare the requested pitch or criteria response separately. Match the classification and responsibilities, keep achievements specific and follow the information pack’s limits. A polished CV cannot compensate for a missing required response.
Understand the application pack first
The Australian Public Service Commission’s application guide explains that an APS application can include a CV, a pitch or criteria response and referee details. Read the actual pack rather than assuming every agency asks for the same combination.
State and territory employers have their own instructions. An APS classification is not a direct substitute for a state role’s capability framework. Copy the correct vacancy reference into your working notes and record the closing time, requested attachments and contact officer before drafting.
Choose evidence at the advertised level
The APSC’s explanation of classifications describes APS 1–2, APS 3–4, APS 5–6 and Executive Levels 1–2 as different levels of work and responsibility. Read the duties, complexity and decision-making scope, not just the title.
For your resume, ask what you were accountable for, who used the work and which decisions needed escalation. An administration example can be strong evidence when it shows accuracy and service judgement. A senior application needs evidence appropriate to its actual scope; adding “strategic” to a routine task does not change the work.
Keep the documents distinct
| Document or field | Its job in the application | Practical check |
|---|---|---|
| Resume | Establish dated experience and relevant contributions | Each important claim has context |
| Pitch | Explain fit using selected evidence | Follow the stated word or page limit |
| Selection criteria | Respond to the questions actually asked | Do not substitute a generic letter |
| Referee details | Allow relevant work to be verified | Check permission and contact sensitivity |
| Eligibility fields | Answer the advertised conditions accurately | Do not infer eligibility from a job title |
| Attachments | Provide the requested material | Check names, versions and upload completion |
Start with the Australian resume guide, then use the selection-criteria guide to prepare the separate response.
Fictional worked example: operations into an APS application
Fictional example: Jordan Example is applying for a hypothetical APS 5 program-support vacancy. The candidate, employer, classification-specific vacancy and figures below are invented.
Jordan’s original bullet says: “Responsible for reporting and stakeholder management.” The revised version says: “Reconciled monthly service returns from six delivery teams, clarified inconsistent definitions with team contacts and prepared an exceptions brief for the program manager.”
That bullet establishes the work, the people involved and the output. In a separate pitch, Jordan could explain the problem, the decision to clarify definitions and how the manager used the brief. The resume and pitch would share the same facts but serve different purposes.
Jordan should not claim to have set program policy if the actual role was compiling and explaining information. Accurate scope is more persuasive than borrowing the language of a higher classification.
Write achievements the panel can assess
Replace “excellent communication” with an example of explaining a difficult issue to a particular audience. Replace “strong judgement” with a decision, its constraints and the point at which you escalated. Where you cannot attach a reliable number to the result, describe the completed output and how it was used.
Keep agency acronyms understandable. A reader from another team should be able to follow your contribution without knowing your internal project names. Remove confidential client, ministerial or operational details; explain the nature of the work at a level you can discuss openly.
For each chosen example, check that you can answer follow-up questions. What did you personally do? What alternative did you consider? Who approved the decision? What changed? These questions help uncover gaps before the interview rather than after the application has been submitted.
Merit pools and referees
The APSC’s current merit-pool guidance distinguishes pools, ranked pools and ranked lists. Inclusion means an assessment outcome; do not present it as an appointment or a guaranteed offer. Keep the exact notification and any conditions with your application records.
Choose referees who can discuss the evidence you used. The APSC application guide recommends noting sensitivities about contact. If your current manager does not know you are applying, follow the agency’s process for communicating that sensitivity rather than inventing a referee or leaving an unexplained requirement unanswered.
Before submission, open the exported files and check the vacancy reference, dates, limits and upload status. Prepare interview examples from the same evidence using the STAR guide.
Questions about government resumes
Is a resume enough for an APS application?
Not when the information pack asks for a pitch, criteria response or other material. Read the specific instructions and provide each requested component.
Should I apply only at my current classification?
Judge the advertised work and requirements against your evidence. This guide does not determine your classification eligibility or suitability for a particular vacancy.
Does a merit pool guarantee a job?
No. Keep the agency’s exact notification and understand the stated assessment outcome. Do not describe pool inclusion as an appointment.
Can my pitch repeat my resume?
The facts should agree, but the pitch should explain selected evidence in relation to the job. Avoid filling the limit by duplicating the employment history.
